What is Task Response in the IELTS Test?

There are certain criteria teachers use in evaluating one’s piece of writing. These criteria guide the teacher’s in assessing the essay’s content, flow and even grammar usage. In the International English Language Testing System examination (IELTS), evaluators follow strict criteria in checking essays in the writing task. One important criterion is Task Response.

What is Task Response?

The Task Response, together with Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, comprises the criteria for the IELTS writing test. The Task Response assess two points in the essay: (1) the development of the idea and (2) the supporting details provided for the idea.

To write introduction for the essay, one has to start by giving a general view of the topic. After this, the candidate should discuss the point of the question and respond to the task. The body should include a good topic sentence to provide outline to the main idea of the paragraph followed by supporting details using different examples in the essay. Finally, the conclusion is a summary of the essay that restates the viewpoint of the question.

How to get a good score in the Task Response?

1. Make sure the essay has answered the tasks given in the question. Consider the major details by carefully studying the task. Take note of these tasks and include it in the outline of your essay. Planning is much needed and should be effectively initiated.
2. Being able to make clear points in the essay is crucial. This will show how well you understood the tasks and how well you are in coming up with ideas to respond to them.
3. Always use examples to support main ideas. Make sure that these ideas are strong enough to give a detailed elaboration of your point.
4. Do not overlook the number of words in the essay. Follow the required number of words or the essay will lose some points.

Candidates should remember that a perfect task response can fully address all parts of the task. A fully developed position in answer to the question with relevant, well supported and fully extended idea must also be presented.

Getting a high score in the IELTS writing exam is possible when candidates know how to write essays that will satisfy the criteria’s needs.
