How to Balance Work and IELTS Review
![]() |
| source: tesolau.com |
According to a recent survey, most Filipinos who are enrolled in an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination are working professionals. These people are preparing for the IELTS for applying work or immigrant visas in countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Having said that most enrollees are working individuals, it is amazing to know how dedicated they are in reviewing for the examination. Yet, there are still a huge number of these people who are in a dilemma to balance work and IELTS review.
What most of these students worry is attending classes. Though some review centers offer review classes until 9 in the evening, there are still students who cannot attend the said schedule. Common reasons include exhaustion from work, distance of the review center or they do overtime work in the office. Being in this kind of predicament, how can these people balance time for work and study?
There are different effective and possible ways. Here are a few strong points how:
• Make use of IELTS apps in your electronic gadgets.
There are lots of mobile applications that are free for download for smartphones. Luckily, most of these mobile apps are available in both iOS and Android platforms. The best thing about these apps is that the students can browse through these during their break at work or while having lunch. For those who are commuting, they can read through lessons while on their way to work.
• Practice speaking English with your workmates
It has always been emphasized that exposure to the English language is a factor to getting a good score in the IELTS test. Practicing with coworkers can be a good opportunity though it may seem awkward at first. The good thing in this way is that you not only practice English but also develop your confidence in using the English language. Confidence is a strong attitude that one should possess when taking the test.
• Take some time to file a leave from work before your exam week
It will be better to focus only on studying two weeks before your examination. This is the best time to bombard yourself with exercises and coaching from people that you know who can help you with English. Taking some time off also means allowing yourself to have a break to be physically ready for the exam. As much as possible, do not take the exam physically and mentally exhausted.
• Find an IELTS online review
Some review centers are already offering online classes for the IELTS. This is a great chance to review right in your own comfortable place. Working individuals can reserve a class based on their availability, so there is no need to worry if they cannot attend the regular class. Online review classes is also best as the teacher can give his full attention to the student.
Working individuals do not have to be stressed out in reviewing for the IELTS class. There are lots of ways to learn IELTS. Practice and exposure to the materials are good ways to review without being in class.

Proper Ways on How To Answer IELTS Speaking
A lot of people find it hard to speak in a large crowd. The fear of making a mistake and being laughed at is the common reason for this. However, in a speaking test such as the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System exam, speaking right in front of a native English speaker is much nerve racking than speaking with a large crowd.
Filipino examinees for the IELTS have to undergo a one-on-one interview with a native English speaker (sometimes a Filipino trained to evaluate the test) for the speaking test. Though the test only lasts for 15 minutes, many candidates for the tests are already anxious in taking this test. This sub-test is unavoidable; hence, all the candidates can do is prepare for this part. How can one prepare for the IELTS speaking test? Here are some proper ways on how you can come up with good responses for the speaking examination.
1. Be familiar with the three tasks of the speaking test and how they are evaluated. Once you understand these tasks, it will be much easier to create responses. With your responses, always consider the following criteria: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, pronunciation, and grammar and accuracy.
2. Have good vocabulary. Examiners are more impressed with candidates who can choose the right words to express what is on their mind. Try to use big words that you know. Avoid using vocabulary that you are unsure with its definition.
3. Be fluent. The flow of your response should sound natural as possible. Take a pause when needed.
4. Do not be monotone. Having the same boring tone in speaking can bore you examiner. Put stress on words that you want to emphasize. Monotone responses are not impressive and can hugely affect your score. Make your responses more interesting with the rising and falling of your tone.
5. Do not ask examiners to define a word that you do not understand. Instead, ask them if they could rephrase the question. Asking them to define the word puts you on a negative light.
6. Open your mouth when speaking. Some examinees feel nervous that they end up mumbling during the test. The clarity of your responses is affected.
7. Correct yourself when you think you made a mistake. This gives the examiner an impression that you are quick to identify mistakes. However, do not make too many corrections.
8. Relax while speaking. Some people are too nervous that their voices break in the middle of the speaking. Be conscious with the tone and loudness of your voice. It is okay to be nervous but do not let it overwhelm you.
9. Be natural as possible. Do not use templates with you answers. Raters are trained to identify patterned answers.
10. Find a speaking partner before the test. This will give you a good opportunity to use the English language and develop confidence as well.
The speaking test should not be dreaded. Instead, make it a challenge and proud to your examiner that you are a good English speaker. Practice and always be open to new learning in the English language.

Requirements for Applying UK Visa
Thousands of Filipinos leave the country every year. Most of
these people go overseas to work or study in other English speaking countries.
One of these countries is the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is known for
its beautiful scenery and rich culture. Also, the UK is also known for its wide
opportunities for working professional and high quality education that every
student wants to take advantage of. For Filipinos, going to the UK is possible
as long as he or she is granted with a visa.
Applying for a UK visa needs several requirements. These
requirements have to be completed in order to be granted a visa. For Filipinos
applying for a student and work visa, here are the usual requirements:
• A valid passport – original, valid for 6 months beyond stay and with at least a blank passport page for UK visa stamps
• British Visa application form – a step-by-step instruction on how to complete this is available online. Also, paying online is possible. This application form will also need biometrics record of the applicant. This consists of the applicants scanned fingers and a full-face digital photograph.
• Photo requirements – the candidates should submit 2x2 photographs in color with a plain or white background.
• A copy of the applicant’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the academic institution the applicant is attending
• A copy of the applicant’s Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) with a reference number holding information about the job and the applicant’s details
• A copy of the applicants IELTS UKVI test result form. Applicants should take the International English Language Testing System examination – United Kingdom Visas and Immigration as English language ability requirement.
• Financial documents to prove that the applicant has enough financial support in living and studying in the UK.

• Financial documents to prove that the applicant has enough financial support in living and studying in the UK.
Obtaining the other requirements is easy and may take time.
However, among the number of requirements, Filipinos are most worried with
taking the IELTS UKVI. The IELS UKVI has the same exam content and scoring system
with the usual IELTS. The difference that it has is that the IELTS UKVI only
accepts results from UKVI accredited test centers. Further, the examination fee is much more
expensive than the usual IELTS test.
For Filipinos who are taking the IELTS UKVI, here are some
points to remember for the test:
- Always check whether you need to take the Academic or the General Training test. Inquire to your agency or better yet, check the immigrations website of the United Kingdom.
- Reserve an examination months before your target date. This is to ensure that the slot is not filled yet and you have some time to do some reviewing.
- Read information about the IELTS UKVI. It is best to know what the test is all about before actually registering for it.
- Take review classes. Reviewing in IELTS UKVI review centers is good in preparing for the test. Test takers are exposed to different exercises that will hone their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Practice. Make yourself confident in using the English language. Knowing the language is good, but you have to believe in yourself that you can do it well in understanding and communicating.

What is UKVI?
Living and working in the United Kingdom could be anybody’s
dream. The UK is a country of interest as it has a rich culture, breathtaking
scenery, and long history. The country gets a lot of tourists annually and continues
to increase in time. Aside from these tourists, what drives people into
visiting the UK is the opportunity to be educated in world-class universities
and colleges and work under prestigious companies and institutions. To anyone
applying for a visa to the UK, one must know about the United Kingdom Visas and
Immigration.
Everyone applying for a visa for the UK has heard or read
about the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration or UKVI. Here are some facts
about this agency:
- The UKVI is a division of the Home Office. It is the agency responsible for the UK Visa system.
- The UKVI is mainly responsible in managing the applications of non-UK residents who want to visit or work in the country.
- The agency has the responsibility in granting applications for business and education institutions to become sponsors for foreign nationals.
- Getting a British citizenship is under the tasks of the UKVI.
- This agency has a workforce of 7,500 people based in different locations in the UK and overseas with trained staff and specialists for varied casework.
- The agency is also responsible in managing the appeals of unsuccessful applicants. They conduct interviews and further investigations before awarding a visa to a particular applicant.
- The agency is strict with its regulations to ensure that everyone in the UK is secured. It aims to protect its citizens from any threat of terrorism.
- The agency also gives protection to those eligible individuals seeking asylum under the 1951 Geneva Convention.
- The agency provides service with politeness and dignity. All information given is made simple and accurate for all applicants.
- The agency is also responsible in providing quality English proficiency tests for those interested in applying for a visa. The International English Language Testing System for the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration is needed for UK visa applications.
Just like any other country, the UKVI conducts inspection of
their visa applicants seriously. It is their task to let non-UK residents live
and work in their country. The agency has to make sure that the people coming
and out of their country will and never be a threat to the safety and security
of everyone living in the UK.
The UKVI recommends every non-UK resident to comply with the
strict guidelines in their visa processing. Visa applications must be done
accurately and completed on the correct form. Visa applicants are also
encouraged to provide original documents with their applications, recent photographs,
and provide evidence of funds that are needed as evidence that the person can
financially survive in the UK.
Some may find these policies or rules strict, but applicants
do not have choice but to comply with them. The UKVI does its best in providing
applicants the best possible service in processing their visas and making sure
that the country continues to be safe and secured from any possible threats.

Tips on How to Respond in IELTS Speaking (Task 1, Task 2, Task 3)
Many Filipinos feel stressed when they talk about taking the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination, most especially the Speaking section. The speaking section is a one-on-one interview with a native English speaker or someone who is very proficient with the language. Filipinos are good English speakers; however, when they are put in a situation wherein they have to speak with a native speaker, they all feel nervous and anxious.
One problem that Filipinos have to get rid of is the feeling of anxiety during their IELTS speaking test. When someone is anxious, this can have an effect on the flow of ideas in the responses which will eventually ruin the examinee’s focus in the interview. To help examinees with the test, here are some tips for each speaking task in the IELTS speaking test.
TASK 1
The first task is an introduction. The examinee is asked very familiar questions in preparation for the much longer questions on the latter part of the test.
• Do not give too much detail on the responses. A couple of sentences as details is good enough.
• Listen to the question carefully. Answer what is asked.
• Do not stray away from the question.
• Give the examiner the chance to ask follow up questions. A yes or no response is not recommended.
Examples:
Q: Could you tell me your full name please?
A:My name is Ernie Angelo Mulat. You can call me Ernie throughout the interview.
Q: Does your name have any special meaning?
A: I am not exactly sure if it has a special meaning, but my mother got it from her favourite
Sesame Street Character, the one who lives with Bert.
Q: Tell me something about your hometown.
A: My hometown is located in the southern part of the city. It has a nice park where people
usually visit on the weekends. There is a good beach about 10 minutes from my home. Further, I
can say that my hometown is very quiet and peaceful since it’s far from the heart of the city.
TASK 2
In the second task, the examinee is given a cue card where a question is given with its guide questions. The examinee is given a minute to prepare and a couple of minutes for his or her response.
• Understand the task before giving the response. Make sure the guide questions are answered.
• Organize the ideas in the response. Use transition words.
• Make an outline. Write in words not in sentences.
Example:
Describe a special occasion when you had a really enjoyable meal.
You should say:
what the occasion was
who was at the meal
what you ate
and explain why the meal was so enjoyable.
Sample response:
Family gatherings have always been very special to my family. It was my 29th birthday that we really had an enjoyable meal.
My parents reserved a buffet dinner in Vikings. It is a buffet restaurant here in the city where food is really fabulous and very satisfying. Aside from my parents and my two sisters, three of my closest friends were also there. We ate really a lot as the restaurant is known for Asian and European cuisines. I was having a mouthful with the pasta and some green salad. The steak was also superb that everyone enjoyed.
The meal was enjoyable because the food was great. Everything was really tasty and delicious. However, what made that day really better was the thought of celebrating my birthday with my loved ones. I love my family and having them around, with my friends, is the best thing I had on my birthday.
TASK 3
The third task is a two-way discussion with the examiner. The topics are connected to the second part’s question.
• Listen carefully to the question. Understand first before making a response.
• Give elaborate responses. Give a general idea and explain further with details.
• Responses should be aligned with the question. Avoid getting out of the topic.
Examples:
Q: What do you think a healthy diet consists of?
A: Personally, I think a healthy diet is a balanced diet of greens and meat. People should eat
more greens and have less meat. For me, no meat is just crazy as our bodies need protein. I believe that people should choose carefully what they put inside their bodies by choosing vegetable and fruits more in their daily diet. Further, people should have fewer intakes of carbonated drinks and more on water to flush out toxins in the body.
Q: Should rich countries help poor countries with more than just food?
A: Indeed. Though many poor countries need food, they also need medicines to treat the sick
people. Not only people are dying from hunger but also from untreated diseases. Rich countries should provide these poor countries medical help by coming up with medical missions and providing free medicines. Since they are poor, it would be impossible for them to buy and maintain taking their medicines. Rich countries should handle this problem and make sure that the poor are not only fed but also treated from their sickness to be healthy.

How to Handle Stress Before the IELTS Exam?
Exams are indeed stressful. Hours are spent in reviewing; some even have study groups to have better understanding on the coverage of the test. As the exam draws near, anxiety builds up and possibly, students lose their confidence that they can pass the exam. The stress creeps in destroying everything the person has worked hard for. The same scenario happens to people who are scheduled to take the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination. They feel nervous for the coming exam and this should be avoided and handled carefully.
Stress is already a part of our system. Since it exists in us, there are a number of ways candidates can do to handle the stress before the IELTS exam. Here are some:
• Know what stresses you the most. Is it the speaking test? Is it the long passages in the reading? As a candidate, you have to know what the cause of this stress is and focus on working on it. For example, if you are poor in reading, give more time on reading practices. The more you feel secure on your weakness, the less stress you get.
• Be at the test center early. Being in the center early means having yourself adjusted with the environment. Get familiar with the location of the toilet or the water fountain. Sit on the chair and relax patiently when your name is called.
• Eat something before going to the exam. Do not go to the exam with an empty stomach. Further, avoid stuffing lot either. Have a nice meal. Eat something healthy. A full stomach lets you think more clearly. As a result, you get better responses in the exam.
• Breathe in and breathe out. Everybody feels stressed but you can fight it. Relax and listen to some nice music while waiting. Do not study while you are at the center. It will just only make you more nervous to take the exam.
• Have plenty of time reviewing. The main reason why we feel stressed for the exam is knowing that the preparation is not enough. Manage time wisely and make sure to review in a day. Just like soldiers to be deployed in a war, do not come to the battle without being prepared and without your bullets. Understand the tasks and all the essential skills for the exam.
There is no room for stress if one is fully prepared for the examination. Prepare by reading and practicing questions for the IELTS. Better yet, enrol in IELTS review programs in IELTS review centers near you.

What are the expressions to avoid during the IELTS speaking test?
Many Filipinos take English proficiency examinations as part of their requirement for visa applications in English speaking countries. In countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is recognized. Any visa applicant – work, student, or even immigrant – has to reach the required score so that their applications will be lodged.
The IELTS has four sections: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Amongst these four, the speaking test is the easiest for some, while some consider it as dreadful and stressful. To start off, the IELTS speaking test is a one-on-one interview with a native English speaker or someone who is trained to conduct speaking exams for the IELTS. Further, this examinee will be conducting the interview for about fifteen minutes. There are three different sections in the exam: interview, long turn, and two-way discussion. All of these tasks are used to evaluate the candidate’s ability to speak English well and understand situations where the said language has to be used.
IELTS speaking candidates have to know that the responses should be logical and appropriate. Hence, most of these candidates take review classes in IELTS review centers. Speaking instructors always remind their students to use the right vocabulary with their responses. Further, they make sure that these IELTS speaking candidates have the correct pronunciation and skill in answering questions. Additionally, most of them are taught on how to be confident with their answers. Most importantly, they are taught not to use some expressions during their speaking test. Here are some words that are to be avoided.
• That is a very interesting question
• Honestly, I personally believe
• I am of the opinion
• It is my personal opinion that I have to
• You know
• As far as I am concerned
• Look
• I am not sure, what do you think?
• I am afraid I know nothing
• What do you mean by…
Why do these phrases need to be avoided?
First, it shows that your responses are in a pattern. It signifies that the candidate’s answer follows a certain template and this will result into a deduction. Responses should come out naturally. Secondly, some of the expressions listed above are very informal. As much as possible, always be formal with the tone of speaking. Finally, examinees should never ask the examiners about the question. Do not ask them to simply, define a word, or even repeat the question more than twice. It shows the lack of preparation and knowledge you have for the examination.

Steps in Taking the NPTE or National Physical Therapy Exam
Any person always dream of a better life. This is the reason many work hard on their jobs to earn money and provide what their family needs. One profession that has been gaining more and more demand overseas is physical therapy. To find growth in their career and better paying jobs, these Filipino physical therapists find a greener pasture overseas, particularly in the land of milk and honey, the United States of America.
Many Filipinos are hunting for jobs in the USA for many reasons. For starters, they pay much better and work benefits are more promising. Second, immigrant workers can possibly bring their families to the United States depending on their visa type. Finally, it is a good opportunity to work while also exploring the country. For Filipino physical therapists, working in the US starts off by preparing for the NPTE or the National Physical Therapist Examination. The NPTE is their licensure exam. Once they pass, they can practice their profession in the US. The NPTE has five different sections containing fifty questions in five different sections. Fifty of these are pretested materials while the other two hundred is scored.
For Filipino physical therapists, this is a guide in taking the NPTE.
1. Know the requirements of the state (jurisdiction).
Some state may require a jurisprudence exam before an applicant can take the NPTE. The purpose for this test is to act as an evaluation whether the applicant has sufficient knowledge on the practice acts in the state they are applying. Once he or she passes this exam, the applicant can move forward to the next step.
2. Fill out the State Application Form.
Complete this form. This form is from the licensing authority of the jurisdiction the applicant is applying for. Read all the necessary information in this form. Make sure that there are no erasures.
3. Registration
Complete all the requirements for the registration. Credentialing is one of these. This is when the applicant’s education on physical therapy is compared and levelled with the current standards in the US. This is to make sure that the knowledge a Filipino physical therapist has is the same with that in the US. Moreover, the Test of English as a Foreign Language should be taken. Candidates should have at least a score of 26 in the speaking test and an overall score of at least 63 in the reading, listening, and writing tests. Payment for the NPTE should be addressed to the FSBPT or the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Online payment is done at www.fsbpt.org.
4. Special Accommodations
Applicants who have special needs should notify the test center for any special requests. This should be done months before the scheduled exam.
5. Approval from the jurisdiction
Once all is done, the licensing authority will notify the applicant on the approval of their eligibility and the FSBPT.
The process can take months and even years, so candidates need to work as early as possible to comply with the requirements.
