There have been speculations that the reading test for the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is the most difficult part of the test. Some may agree with this while other would say that all you need is practice to get a good score in the reading test.
The reading test’s content is different in both the Academic and the General Training modules of the IELTS. Quite a number of candidates who took the General Training test say that the reading test is challenging but with the right training and practice, acquiring the target score is very possible. • Build a good vocabulary. Test takers will be saving much time if they can understand a vocabulary without taking a long time figuring out what could it mean. In addition, with better and strong vocabulary, choosing the right answer will not be a problem as one can identify synonymous terms in the questions asked.
• Once you do not know what the answer is to a specific question, mark it and move on to the next one. Do not spend too much time guessing. Answer the other questions and go back to that question if you still have time.
• Always read instructions carefully. There are times that we overlook instructions, and as a result, we choose the wrong answers. Understand the question carefully before deciding on an answer.
• Know how to eliminate answers. Some answers look right and the same with the other options. Read them carefully and remove options that are irrelevant or false. Doing this narrows down your choices.
• Learn the skill of skimming and scanning. There are times that the passage is too long that you need to browse through it to take note of the gist of the passage and the details in the passage. Skimming and scanning make this easier.
• Manage your time while reading and answering. Always check on how much time you have. Prioritize reading passages that seem easier over the more difficult ones.
• Do mock exams for the reading test. Mock exams are available in IELTS review centers. These review centers have programs designed to educate candidates for the IELTS about the exam. Mentors will be teaching skills and providing activities that will hone the skills of these candidates.
These tips are easy and very useful. The most important tip in the IELTS reading is the exposure to reading practices of the candidate. It is important for candidates to know the different types of questions along with the skills they need not only to get a good score for the test but also respond to questions easily and correctly.
