How to Build Vocabulary? What is the Best Practice to Improve Vocabulary?

To be able to be understood by other people, we need to communicate. Communication can either be done verbally or through text. Whatever type of communication people use, good vocabulary is needed. Having the right vocabulary can effectively deliver a person’s message to his or her listener. Having a good foundation on vocabulary will make a person a good communicator.

English has been used by many nowadays, like here in the Philippines. Because of this, Filipinos are considered to be one of the many nationalities who are good English speakers. Like what was mentioned before, it is essential for someone to have a good command in vocabulary to be good at speaking English. How can one build strong vocabulary?

First, learners of the English language should develop the love for reading. It is with reading that people get to know words that they can use in their daily lives. However, since reading is not an activity that most people enjoy, people can start by reading materials that are entertaining. Students can start by reading comic books or fairy tales for example. In this way, they will be learning new words and at the same time entertained with their material.

As one progresses, students can choose other materials as newspapers, magazines and even blogs. These types of reading materials use some jargons that are can provide new knowledge to the reader. Jargons are words that are specifically used in a particular field of study. Being exposed to such will help the reader understand concepts and ideas in particular areas of knowledge. Aside from that, learners can also learn styles of writing and different sentence constructions.

Apart from reading, watching movies and listening to English songs are helpful in getting new words. There are a lot of expressions and idioms that are used in conversations that one can use. A variety of words in conversations makes it more smart and appropriate. Learners have to be careful in choosing what movies to watch and music to listen to as some of these might have explicit content.

Learning vocabulary should be fun. People learn more if they are enjoying what they are doing. Every day is a new opportunity to learn new words and discover more expressions that can be used not only in speaking English but also in writing English. What learners of the English language should do is discover all kinds of possibilities and opportunities for them to learn English.
