How to Pass the IELTS? Start Within You

Sometimes, when we fail in an examination, we blame ourselves for not studying hard. We look back and review on the topics we failed to study. Feeling bad after an examination is normal. We have high expectations and we feel hopeful while taking the examination. This feeling is exactly the same to people who are taking the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination.

People in the IELTS are often given tips on how to be successful in the examination. Most of the time, these tips work perfectly fine. However, a candidate should know that they should also be positive and somehow have a good disposition when taking the test. Here are some things that candidates must have in gaining a positive outlook towards the IELTS test.

Patience
Learning English is not completed overnight. In fact, it is a never ending process. We learn new words everyday and discover more about English as the learning goes. Be patient if you cannot understand a word or an idea that is presented. There is always a dictionary to help you or a friend you can ask for help.

Passion
Someone should be passionate in learning. One has to be enthusiastic in learning English. The interest in learning must be kept burning until the test day. Losing the drive to study can affect  your performance in the IELTS test.

Determination
The candidate should be determined to get the score. When one is determined to achieve the score, the more focused he or she gets in learning for the IELTS. Set your goals and let it drive you to achieving your score.

Preparedness
Being prepared means that you are already equipped with the knowledge, skills and strategy for the examination. You only get this when you have given a lot of time in reviewing for the test.

Confidence
If you are not confident with your responses, how will you be able to deliver your responses well? Be confident that you are an English speaker. You have undergone training and coaching; show them how well you can understand and speak the language.

Having a positive outlook towards your performance in the IELTS exam brings good vibes. Always remember that what you think of the exam can affect your exam. Condition your mind to lessen your anxiety on the exam and improve more on your confidence and determination in getting your target scores.

Is Accreditation Needed for the IELTS Test?

Are you thinking of taking the IELTS examination?

The IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is an English fluency examination. This examination is taken by individuals who want to work, study, and immigrate overseas. The IELTS certificate is accepted in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and even the United States of America.  The test has gained its popularity among companies and academic institutions because of its reliability and accuracy in measuring the English fluency of its takers.

First and foremost, candidates need to know that there are two accredited agencies that deliver the IELTS examination – the IDP and the British Council. Some might be asking why there are two agencies. Accordingly, the IELTS was founded by the University of Cambridge, IDP and the British Council. Some countries are under the coverage of British Council while some of the IDP. Luckily in the Philippines, both agencies are present. Candidates should know that these are the only agencies accredited to give the IELTS examination.

Upon the candidate’s registration for the examination, they should choose to register for the IDP or British Council. Some are wondering if there is any difference regarding the content of the exam under these organizations. The truth is – the content is the same; the only difference they have is the cost of the exam. For candidates, it is best to inquire to the company or school you are applying for whether they accept the IDP, British Council or both.

Registering for the test is easy as it can be done online. Moreover, IELTS review centers can also help in registering for the exam. However, the candidates have to be aware that these centers should be accredited by the IDP or the British Council. One review center in the Philippines that is accredited by the British Council and IDP is JRooz Review Center. It has branches in Baguio, Manila, Cebu, and Davao City.  IELTS review centers like JRooz are authorized to help candidates for the examination. They will ensure that the applicants have the right requirements for the application. Moreover, personnel in these review centers guide candidates in filling up the application form to avoid mistakes.

The IELTS examination is an important requirement for every candidate to complete. Paying for the exam and review courses is costly; hence, candidates do their best in the exam. Be sure to pick only the authorized and accredited review centers for the IELTS examination.

How to Build Vocabulary? What is the Best Practice to Improve Vocabulary?

To be able to be understood by other people, we need to communicate. Communication can either be done verbally or through text. Whatever type of communication people use, good vocabulary is needed. Having the right vocabulary can effectively deliver a person’s message to his or her listener. Having a good foundation on vocabulary will make a person a good communicator.

English has been used by many nowadays, like here in the Philippines. Because of this, Filipinos are considered to be one of the many nationalities who are good English speakers. Like what was mentioned before, it is essential for someone to have a good command in vocabulary to be good at speaking English. How can one build strong vocabulary?

First, learners of the English language should develop the love for reading. It is with reading that people get to know words that they can use in their daily lives. However, since reading is not an activity that most people enjoy, people can start by reading materials that are entertaining. Students can start by reading comic books or fairy tales for example. In this way, they will be learning new words and at the same time entertained with their material.

As one progresses, students can choose other materials as newspapers, magazines and even blogs. These types of reading materials use some jargons that are can provide new knowledge to the reader. Jargons are words that are specifically used in a particular field of study. Being exposed to such will help the reader understand concepts and ideas in particular areas of knowledge. Aside from that, learners can also learn styles of writing and different sentence constructions.

Apart from reading, watching movies and listening to English songs are helpful in getting new words. There are a lot of expressions and idioms that are used in conversations that one can use. A variety of words in conversations makes it more smart and appropriate. Learners have to be careful in choosing what movies to watch and music to listen to as some of these might have explicit content.

Learning vocabulary should be fun. People learn more if they are enjoying what they are doing. Every day is a new opportunity to learn new words and discover more expressions that can be used not only in speaking English but also in writing English. What learners of the English language should do is discover all kinds of possibilities and opportunities for them to learn English.

Now here are two sample responses for questions numbers 3 and 6.
I come from a very big group of friends but I am particularly close with Ernie. Ernie and I have been friends since we were seven years old. It was in a school activity when I met him. We were first graders and I saw him sitting alone on a bench. I approached him and asked to sit down with him. Since that day, we were always seen together playing and having snacks together. We were in the same school from elementary to high school. Though we went to different universities, we still had time to meet after our classes or on weekends. Now, he is working as a nurse and I work as a teacher. On weekends, we always hangout watching movies, trying new restaurants and even just staying at his place or mine. What I like best about Ernie is his sense of humor. He has never failed to make me laugh. I guess though we come from different fields, our minds never clash and there is always something interesting to talk about when we are together. No dull moments between us.

Number 6
People do different things to be healthy. As for me, I enjoy going to the gym. Working out has been my hobby for the past few years. I was a little chubby when I was younger and I got scared of the possible sickness I might acquire as I grew older. I decided to enrol in Holiday Spa here in Davao. At first, I was hesitant but I was constantly encouraged by my friends who I went with in the gym. It has been three years now and I have lost some weight. For me, working out is not only to shed fat. It is also a way for me to relieve stress at work. People should not think that people who work out are those who are fat or chubby. Though you are thin or average built, exercising is recommended to be strong and healthy.

This is What I Did to Pass the IELTS Test

Studying in a university nowadays has been very costly. Tuition keeps on increasing every year and it is amazing how a typical Filipino student can pay his or her way tuition through different scholarships or by getting part-time jobs. And as for me who have finished my degree a year ago, getting a scholarship in the United Kingdom for a post-graduate degree was indeed a blessing.

I applied for a scholarship grant since I am not financially capable of sending myself to graduate studies. I was a little embarrassed to ask my parents to finance me in my graduate studies. Luckily, I passed and was given the requirements for school. One of these requirements was for me to take the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination. I was an English major and I thought this would just be a piece of cake.

I started my preparation through searching on the internet for some IELTS practice tests. Later on, I tried purchasing review manuals suggested online. At first, I was getting good scores until I realized that I was starting to have a hard time. First, the reading passages were too long for the given time. It was too difficult for me to finish reading and answering a task. Listening was a bit odd since I was not familiar with English accents other than American English. Speaking was difficult without someone to talk to and writing was a challenge especially describing graphs and data. Right at that moment, I told myself that I needed an IELTS review center.

I enrolled in one and attended classes. There were a lot of things that I learned from the lectures and classes. Additionally, the environment in the class was not really stressing as everyone worked hard to get their target scores. The trainings taught me skills that I needed for the exam and even improved the ones I already have. It was a total surprise for me to learn more things about English particularly for the IELTS test. After a couple of months, I took the test and got my target score of 7. I was really thankful and so I want to share to you the things I did to pass my test.

1. Read a lot. It does not have to be something academic. Any material will do as long as you learn new words and improve the love for reading. You will need your interest in reading improved for you will be reading long passages in the test.

2. Watch movies in English on different accents. Try watching movies of Hugh Grant or Nicole Kidman. Their accents are wonderful to help you learn more on British and Australian English accents respectively.

3. Speak English when there is an opportunity. I tried speaking English when I was around them. It helped a lot boosting not only my skill but also my confidence.

4. Have a journal. I always wrote a single paragraph essay just to practice my writing. As time went on, I wrote essays on different topics. Like what they say, practice makes perfect.

IELTS review centers teach a lot of skill building and development. However, you must also do things to better your skills by following the things I mentioned above. Do not get nervous for the test. No one gets anxious when they are confident and have the right preparation for the examination.
