A lot of people have considered teaching as the noblest profession – that without teachers, we would be all illiterate. Indeed, the teaching profession is one of the most challenging professions. It is the teacher’s responsibility to fill in the need for knowledge and understanding of youngsters in school. Because of teachers, we have engineers, lawyers, architects, and even new breed of teachers.
The teaching profession is also very in demand in countries overseas like Australia. In reality, there are a lot of foreign nationals who are seeking job opportunities in the field of the academe in the mentioned country. However, there are some requirements that one should be able to provide before they can teach in Australia.
Applicants who want to teach in Australia need to know that there is a language requirement which is also standard in all states including New Zealand. Here are 3 different exams that are recognized and accepted:
a. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
Applicants have to take the Academic Module of the exam getting an overall band score of 7.0. In addition, the applicant has to score at least 7.0 in reading, 8.0 in listening, 8.0 in speaking and 7.0 in writing.
b. International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR)
Applicants should reach Level 4 in all the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
c. Professional English Assessment for Teachers (PEAT)
Band A is required from applicants from its four language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
The IELTS test is a paper-based test that assesses an individual with his or her English abilities. Composed of four different parts, the IELTS test accurately gauges the individual’s level through the different tasks incorporated in the exam.
The ISLPR tasks are all designed to reflect real-life language use. The interview starts off with an interview from a common topic to things that interest the candidate. In addition, the reading and listening tasks are based on questions about texts from news and public announcements.
The level of competence in English is tested in PEAT. It has been made clear that PEAT is not an assessment of subject matter competence but an assessment of one’s English skills as a whole. It will evaluate your proficiency if you are already able to teach and interact effectively in schools in Australia.
Applicants are also reminded that they need to be registered in order to have a teaching profession – no matter how long your teaching service is or how great your qualifications are.
