The Two Modules in the IELTS Test

Academic or General Training?

Every test taker of the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination knows that there are two kinds of modules for the IELTS exam – the Academic and the General Training. IELTS test takers already have an idea of what to type of test to take in the IELTS examination. For those who are still going to take the examination, here is some information for those planning to take the IELTS regarding its two different modules.

The IELTS Academic is taken by individuals who are going to study or train in an English speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. In addition, students who are going to study in an undergraduate or postgraduate course for more than six months are required to take the IELTS Academic module.  Furthermore, individuals who are going to work for a professional organization need to have an IELTS score in the Academic Module.

In the General Training, individuals who are evaluated in this type of test are those who are going to study on a secondary education, aiming for work experience and training programs. The General Training module focuses on the general survival skills in social and workplace contexts. Further, the General Training module is required for people applying for immigration in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Whether you are taking the General Training or the Academic Module, it is best for candidates to prepare for the examination. Preparation can be done through self-review or participating in review classes for the IELTS examination. Different IELTS review centers have created programs that will fit best for the needs of these IELTS test takers. For Filipinos, using the English language is not much of a problem. They only need to learn the right skills and techniques, widen their vocabulary, better their sentence construction and grammar to be able to come up with good responses for the examination.

Further, Filipinos are taught how to be more confident in using English. If a candidate is confident with it, then there will not be any problems in getting the right overall band score in the examination. Coaches in review centers give speaking activities to help better the candidate’s pronunciation, intonation, and grammar construction in speaking. Given the right amount of exposure in mock examinations in the exam, Filipino candidates will have the idea on what to do on the real IELTS examination – both for the Academic and the General Training modules.
