The Four Components of the IELTS Test

Being one of the most spoken languages in the world, many non-native English speakers such as the Filipinos take time to learn the English language. Since it is spoken by many, the global market, business and education particularly, has been particular in accepting individuals in their institutions who can use the English language very well. Hence, different people have started reviewing their English skills prior to taking an English proficiency examination. Amongst these examinations, the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is the most popular among Filipinos.

The IELTS test is a paper-based examination. Candidates of the said examination are scored on bands from 0 to 9. These band scores are very important as companies and academic institutions are very particular with their score requirements. The IELTS examination is divided into four different tests – the speaking, listening, speaking and writing. Let us take a look on what to expect on these four components of the IELTS test.
The speaking examination of the IELTS is a one-on-one interview with a native English speaker. Done within ten to fifteen minutes, the speaking examination evaluates the individual’s ability to manage conversations in the English language. Moreover, this part of the test examines the candidate’s skill in responding to different conversation contexts as part of the tasks.

The listening section of the IELTS test gauges the individual’s ability to understand the English language in recorded conversations and lectures. In this section, candidates will listen to audio recordings and respond to questions based on the audio passage. Candidates should be able to showcase their talent in note taking as well.

Vocabulary and reading comprehension are both important in the reading section of the IELTS. There are quite a number of words that may seem unfamiliar to candidates; hence, it is suggested that any test taker should manage to read different reading materials such as newspapers, magazines, journals, and textbooks.
Finally, the writing section evaluates the candidate’s ability in using the English language in written form. Here, the candidates will face different tasks like data interpretation, responding to letters and even expressing one’s viewpoint. Grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure are some of the things candidates should have a strong background in getting a good score for the IELTS writing section.
