I took the International English Language Test System a few years ago. It was roughly a year after I graduated and during my stint as an ESL teacher in Alabang. I only had enough money for the examination and I did not really have time to go through the review. After all, I was working. I did the best I could, which involved getting myself a copy of the review materials and answering on my own.

I passed the examination, so if you asked me, “Will I be able to get the band score I want if I study by myself?” my honest answer is “maybe”.

Here are the top 5 factors which can determine if you can pass the exam on your own:

1. Your English proficiency. Of course your level of English proficiency is important. The better you are at wielding the language, the higher the probability of you passing the test through self study. This is because you will not have to spend so much time studying the basics – Grammar and vocabulary. You can, of course, learn these things on your own, There are resources available online and offline in order to self-study the basics.

For those who are starting of with very low knowledge on the basics of English, though, a little help from a tutor or a review center may be needed.

2. Your attitude. This is one of the most important things to consider whether you are studying on your own or with the aid of a review center. Are you disciplined, determined, and properly motivated? Or do you give up easily, constantly procrastinate, and question your motivation to study? Do you follow instructions well? Do you take your review seriously? Having the right mindset can do wonders for your review –whether alone or in a class. Learning a language and the techniques needed in order for you to answer questions well are not feats you can succeed in in a matter of hours. It could take days, even months. Having the right attitude is important for you to persevere in the pursuit for success.

3. Your knowledge about the examination. At the end of the day, the IELTS Is still an exam. This means that there are certain unwritten rules that you must follow in order to correctly answer an item, or employ a specific technique in order to cope with a particular question type.  You can find these techniques online, but if you are rather lazy, the best way to learn this is in a review center or with a tutor.

Do you think you can pass the exam by studying on your own? You might, if the factors above are in your favor.
