The English language proficiency exams are truly
nerve-wracking experiences and having no confidence can cost you – literally
and figuratively. The IELTS and TOEFL would both need you on be on top of your
game. Remember that in both exams time is against you – you have no time for
blunders – and that if you let anxiety get the better of you, it downgrades
your performance. Here are some times on how to gain confidence for your
international English exams.
1.
Do
your best with the preparations. Nothing else can boost your confidence
more than knowing you are ready to take the TOEFL or IELTS. Make sure that when
you are about to take the exam, you will have no qualms about doing so because
you know that you have trained yourself well for it, to the point that you no
longer doubt that you will pass. Focus on English proficiency and techniques
for the exam. Enroll in a review center, practice smartly, and review the
basics of English are steps you may want to take for ample preparation.
2.
Practice
good and accurate English in everyday life. Make English a second language
– make it your nature to communicate in the language, so that when you take the
examination, it will also feel as if what you are doing is an everyday thing.
Excel in using the language in everyday life and you excel in the IELTS or
TOEFL.
3.
Talk
to someone. If you are getting the pre-IELTS/TOEFL jitters, it may be
helpful to talk to someone of authority – your review center teacher or coach,
for instance. This will be helpful as these people can give you a relatively
precise idea of the status of your performance and they can also give you
points for improvement. Having an idea of how you are doing and your readiness
to take the exam, as well as recommendations on how you can improve will help
your confidence. You may have problems, but it will help you realize that you
also have solutions to it. Knowing that a situation is not impossible to
rectify and you have the ability to do so helps up the self-esteem.
Confidence is an integral part of facing any challenge.
Believe in yourself, especially if you have done the appropriate prep work. If
you have it, you’ve got it. Do not let anxiety get the better of you.
Good luck!
