What is the Usual OBS Required for the Academic Module?

Filipinos are very accustomed to using the English language. As a matter of fact, English has been the second language used by many Filipinos. With this fluency with the English language, it is not surprising to see different Filipinos working or studying in English speaking countries. For instance, there is a huge population of Filipinos in Australia working in the healthcare industry. In Canada, there are a good number of people working in different global companies. With this, it is evident that foreign nationals trust Filipinos skills not only with their profession but also in using the English language.

It is important to know that finding work overseas in such good companies is not easy. There are a lot of requirements to be completed. It usually takes a great deal of time and money to be able to go overseas. One requirement that Filipinos have to prioritize is taking the IELTS examination or the International English Language Testing System examination – an English proficiency examination.

Being an English proficiency examination, the test will use the four areas of English – speaking, reading, listening, and writing – to assess one’s proficiency in the language. The speaking examination is a one-on-one interview where candidates have to face a native English speaker to evaluate their communication skills. The written exams, on the other hand, are to evaluate the candidate’s skill in understanding English vocabulary, contexts and interpreting date and their own opinion in written test. The examination has two modules and the Academic Module is commonly taken.

What makes the Academic Module different from the other module, the General Training, is that its reading test has longer and more complex passages. Candidates are faced with passages from textbooks, news articles and journals that use difficult vocabulary and more challenging questions. Further, the writing examination is more difficult. In the first task, the candidate is expected to come up with an essay describing a particular graph or a diagram. Though the Academic exam poses a great challenge, a lot still take it because it is their requirement. What is the score requirement for these individuals?

Most of the time, an overall band score (OBS) of 7.0 is needed. An overall band score of 7.0 indicates that the person is a good English speaker. This means that the individual has an operational command of the language. There could be occasional inaccuracies; however, in general, the person can handle complex language well and understand detailed reasoning. Some institutions may even a higher score of 8.0 most especially to those who are applying for student visas. These particular students are planning to study their post-graduate studies in universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and even in the United States of America.

What candidates for the IELTS need to first in registering for the exam is to specifically indicate what module they need. Some have their agencies so it is best to ask their personnel. For those who do not have any, emailing the institution is a must. Further, you can inquire in different IELTS review centers. Plus, you may also take advantage of the review courses they are offering in preparation for the IELTS examination.
