IELTS Academic Training in the Philippines

Every candidate of the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination is constantly reminded to double check whether they need to take the Academic or the General Training module of the examination. These two modules of the test are different in terms of the content and style of the reading and writing sections. Furthermore, a candidate’s purpose whether for employment or education also depends on which type of test he or she takes. Most people who are planning to work and study for more than six months overseas take the Academic Module of the IELTS test. What is in the Academic Module?

Like what is mentioned earlier, the Academic module is for those Filipinos or non-native English speakers who want to study or undergo training in universities in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and even in some parts of the United Stated of America.  Undergraduate and post graduate course programs depend on the score of the Academic Module. Moreover, working professionals who seek employment in a professional organization in an English-speaking country has to take the IELTS Academic module as well.

It is known to every candidate that IELTS review training is needed to be successful in the said examination. People who opt for the Academic module is expected to have a rigid training on reading and writing.

In the reading, candidates are taught on how to skim and scan through reading passages. Reading passages in the said module are far much longer and complex compared to those in the General Training. These reading passages can be taken from textbooks, journals, newspapers and even magazines. Candidates are given exercises that will enhance their skill in getting the main idea of reading passages without having to read the whole passage. Further, they will be given activities to enhance their vocabulary and their ability to get details in a reading passage.

Writing tasks are also far more difficult. In the first task, candidates are given a graph or diagram to be interpreted. He or she should be able to describe it effectively. As part of the training in IELTS review centers, writing mentors give certain vocabulary words that will highlight the needs on the tasks. They also conduct grammar and sentence structure classes to build better paragraphs for the essay. On the second task, an opinion-based essay should be written. Here, mentors are tasked to develop the skill in their student’s to think of ideas that will support their claims in the essay. Activities include brainstorming, clustering of ideas, and even diagramming of opinions that will work best for the essay.
