What most people do in applying for a job overseas or obtaining a certificate of enrolment from a college or university overseas is to take an English proficiency test. An English proficiency test is an examination that will gauge an individual’s ability to use the English language in its four core skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing. Among the many English proficiency tests available worldwide, one name has been popular through its relevance and accuracy – the IELTS or the International English Language Testing System examination.

The Philippines is one country which uses English as its second language. However, this has not been a taken as a consideration for Filipinos not to take the examination. 1. IELTS test is administered by two agencies – the British Council and the IDP. 2. There are two different tests in the IELTS – Academic Module and the General Training Module. The Academic Module is more on undergraduate and post-graduate courses while the General Training is for work or trainings.

3. Not only is American English used in the said examination, but also British English and Australian English. Hence, candidates are advised to be familiar in any English accents for their own advantage in the exam.

4. As mentioned earlier, there are four core skills being evaluated in the IELTS. These four are the reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Each section of the exam measures the ability of the individual to comprehend and use the English language.

5. Registering for the exam can be done online or with the help from the IELTS review center you are currently enrolled in.

6. British Council charges PhP 8986 while IDP charges at PhP 8900.

7. Countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and some parts of the United States in America recognize IELTS as a valid English proficiency test certificate.

8. Scoring of the exam is from bands 0 to 9. Contact the institution you are applying for the specific score requirements they need.

9. Speaking examination is done face-to-face with a native speaker.

10. The IELTS exam in the Philippines is valid up to two years.
